If you want to add an outside outlet 90' away from an exising outside outlet that you'd tap in to which uses #12 wire on a 20amp 120V circut and about 60' from the electric box, can someone just use #10, #8, or #6 wire for the extension or does the entire run have to be the same gage?

Thanks in Advance!

The code is a minimum standard. Any conductor larger than the minimum requried size would be permitted any where within a circuit. The method or manner in which a circuit is corrected for voltage drop is a design consideration and not mandated by the code.

Wire does not need to be the same size throughout the circuit. As long as the smallest wire size is rated for the ampacity of the circuit, you can use larger wire elsewhere to make up for voltage drop.

I would find one of the voltage drop calculators and figure what size wire you needed before I would just guess and use #6 wire.
