the only application I know is:

making sure motors will turn in the desired direction prior to energizing them

The "indicator" is usually just a handheld tool used for comissioning equipment to make sure the rotation is right. The relay is used for equipment that must run in a certain direction or equipment will be damaged and/or lives lost. Elevators are one such instance.

You guys are missing one very important use of phase rotation device. That is tieing in with another source onto your buss. If you bring on another source, out of phase you will test your swithgear beyond it's design criteria.

There are several uses, and I'd like to think that all of them are important. They generally have to do with equipment or life preservation.

You need to know your supply rotation. Say it is ABC.

Attach leads of Phase Rotation Meter to Motor leads A-T1 B-T2 C-T3 and spin motor shaft by hand in the correct rotation.

The Phase Rotation Meter will indicate if the rotation is correct for that connection.

When dealing with separate sources you need more than just a phase rotations meter. For example if you have a system with one extra delta/wye transformer an you try to parallel it with another system you will be 30 degrees out of phase yet your rotation meter will show the same rotation.
