What's the history behind dryers and ranges getting away with 3, not 4 wire plugs/cords?

My memory was most dryers had 120V motors & 120V timers, which made little sense to me. And my stove has a 120V clock & outlets.

ISTM Canada would have none of it, and required 4-prongs.....

What I heard is after WWII mfgs wanted to sell appliances for the post war market, eliminate the ground to save copper. But the first circuit requiring an EGC was the washing machine in 1947, so EBC were just not installed or provided.
