Is there a minimum distance that a grounding bus and neutral bus must be located from each other? The ones in question have a bout a 1/8" gap between them, metal to metal.

408.56 has some information on this topic. But its associated table might not specifically address your question. It gives a minimum separation between live parts and ground, and your 1/8 inch is not sufficient. My question is whether we are to consider the neutral bus as being "live parts." This is, however, a moot issue, because of the exception that takes listed parts of panelboards out of the requirement.

Interesting idea to ponder. I want to say no, but......hmmmm.
