The correct term is "Equipment Grounding Conductor," or "EGC."

The general concept is that the EGC connects the metal exterior case of the load (for example, the case of the motor) directly to the ground bar at the main panel. The intent is to create a low-resistance path for current to flow, in the event a short circuit occurs in the equipment. That is, if an energized wire comes into contact with the metal case, a person touching the case would be shocked, or worse. But the EGC will give the current another path, and a large current will flow in the EGC. That will cause the breaker to trip, thus terminating the event.
