I am in of need information on the color coding of phase terminations. As an example what color of phase tape should be used on the end of a wire phase #1 600 vac. And then phase #2 and so on? And then 480 vac.
Also I am looking for how to decipher the letter abbreviations on wire coverings. Example T, LSE, LSX T/N and so on.
Thank you for the help.

Re: Color Coding

Michael,

#1 the NEC doesn't require color coding except in a few areas. articles 310, 517, 250 and a couple more, but 517 is the only one that actually specifies "phase colors". (besides the high leg of a delta, which has changed over the years)

This means what is a standard in a given facility would not be a standard industry wide.

The trade norm for 480v is brown, orange, yellow, but this doesn't mean anything. YOUR METER IS YOUR SAFETY DEVICE.

# 2 Article 310.13

Re: Color Coding

Information on wire markings is in the NEC.
There is no color code requirement in the NEC, Rogers answer was perfect. However, if you have mulitwire branch circuits from different systems in the same box, enclosure or raceway, each system grounded conductor (neutral): one will be white or gray, and the other white or gray with a stripe. Also, you have to post the color used for identification of the multiwire branch circuits.
See 200.6 (D) and 201.4(D)
