My boss and I have taken odds on this topic. The difference of opiion is wheather a 50amp Spilt system Air-conditioner can be wired with the conductors being Alum #6 XHHW. It is my belive that due to 110.14(C)(1)(a)(2) we must use a larger wire #4. But he feels that the fact that the conductor rateing of #6 xhhw falling in the 75c column @50 amps is sufficiant. Any advice would help on the topic.

Re: Conductor sizing??????

If you cannot confirm the temperature rating on the unit, then you must use the 60 deg column if the circuit 100A or less.
Does the unit indicate the minimum circuit ampacity? If it requires a 50A circuit, then #4 AWG AL, or #6 AWG CU is the way to go.

Re: Conductor sizing??????

Also, if the unit requires a 50A circuit breaker, it does not automatically indicate a 50A conductor must be used. Look at the nameplate of the unit for circuit ampacity.
