Do think its a good idea to use an optocoupler in the input to start a motor, when this circuit most times shorts? And yes their might be 5 types of opto-couplers.

are you talking about a opto SSR ??
all SSR's are sensitive to flyback issues (motor/inductive power control)
the opto versions do provide isolation

that said, not really sure what the Q was, so not sure if i helped.

common practice in industrial electronics.

I would warn you that there is often a huge difference between the reliability of such things used in industrial settings and what hobbyists often use.
