Brass or Stainless Hawke Gland

With regards to the 501/453 style of Hawke gland, when would you want to use brass vs. nickel plated brass vs. stainless steel?

You can assume that they are being used in the appropriate hazardous/non-hazardous areas. They are also being used in an offshore environment.

This is basically an issue of metallurgy. Section 110.28 prohibits corrosion but most of the fitting you have suggested will work fine in most atmospheres.

With regard to assuming the fittings are being used appropriately, I don’t. Hawke is a very good manufacture; but, as far as I can tell, the 501/453 glands are only recognized under IEC Standards. They only have “Ex” rather than the “AEx” recognition required by Section 505.9(C)(2).
