What classification would an auto repair garage be. My opinion is that it should be Class 1 Div. 2 location. If I am reading 511.3(B)(3) correctly, it states that any wiring below 18"
from the floor and 18" below the highest point of the ceiling are cosidered haz loc. but all wiring in between those areas are not and normal wiring methods can be used. Just oil changes and repair work will be done in this area.

All references are to the 2002 NEC.

Unless the facility is using Compressed Natural Gas, there is no need to classify the ceiling area.

In general, standard wiring methods are acceptable outside the classified location; however, caution is still necessary for wiring methods located above, but outside the 18" floor location. See 511.7. There are also cautions for raceway run through the classified area. Section 511.9 refers to the requirements in 501.5(B)(2). You may also need to look at 501.5(E)(2).
