European rating of device

Hi all,

I am trying to design a system for the following areas.
Class 1, Div 1, and Class 2, Div, 2

i am looking for a barcode scanner that will work in the defined areas, but the ratings are somewhat new to me
and I need help.

I have a scanner, intrensically safe, but the ratings are as follows

Ex protection type
II 2G Ex ib IIC T4
-20 ?C < Ta < +50 ?C
II 2D ibD 21 T135 ?C
-20 ?C < Ta < +50 ?C

Would someone please explain them.

In US domestic usage, the markings you describe mean nothing. See 505.9(C) and 506.9(C) for proper marking requirements. However, they will help you understandwhat the IEC marks generally mean.

That said, you cannot use equipment that is only marked with 'Ex' . You would be looking for it to be marked 'AEx' or with the needed Class and Division, to start off with. Other restrictions apply.

Do not confuse the US Zone system with the IEC / EU / ATEX systems. While they are similar in some respects, they are not interchangeable in standards or usage.
