Lighting fixture support

Please settle a code diagreement. One opinion is that lighting fixtuers must always be supported to a structural member. The other contends that in NJ you must go by the sesmic rating of the location where the fixtures are being installed.

In massachusetts we must always supported light fixturs to a structural member.


It is in our State Electrical code..

I recently worked in a house where there were dry wall issues because of how it had been installed back in the 1970s (glued, not nailed or screwed). I took a ceiling mount light down for the drywallers and had the whole sheet of drywall fall on my head since the fixture was the only thing still supporting the drywall. Not fun.
