I've been asked to retrofit/convert an existing line voltage outdoor landscaping setup to low voltage lighting. No idea why the home has line voltage set up outdoors, particularly since it was installed without conduit or junction boxes. I'm going to put in a transformer obviously and low voltage fixtures. Should I be able to use the existing wire/cable or will I need to run new wire? Anything else I need to think about?

You need to look at the size of the existing wire and calculate the percentage voltage drop at what may also be higher current.
And confirm the wire is a direct burial type.
If you replace with LED the current may not be higher, but 1.2 volts is one percent of 120 but 10 percent of 12.
