Hi Mike
I would like to find where in the code book it states that you cannot use another compartment as a race way(route a cable through one compartment to get to another compartment) but instead you shall go to the assigned compartment directly.

It does not specifically say that, here is the section

408.3 Support and Arrangement of Busbars and Conductors.

(3) Same Vertical Section.
Other than the required interconnections
and control wiring, only those conductors that
are intended for termination in a vertical section of a
switchboard shall be located in that section.

Exception: Conductors shall be permitted to travel horizontally
through vertical sections of switchboards where
such conductors are isolated from busbars by a barrier.

For this reason we usually install a so called "Crown box" on the top to go from section to section. The boxes on top are an addition to the sections of switchgear.

Crown box???? You must mean a header box. It is funny how terms are area dependent.

In addition a "CROWN BOX" makes terminating so much easier, especially on UPS's and other conductor crowded equipment.

While I sold switchgear we simply called it a "pull box." Pull boxes often refered to as a "pull section" are also commonly added to the end of a piece of switch gear to facilitate cable entry.
