Does the NEC cover wiring installed in a Box Truck style Automotive Vehicle? The scope of article 551 applies to Recreation Vehicles but I didn't see any reference to other than?

I saw a mobile work truck wired up for field service with 120volt outlets, air compressor, lighting, etc.

The scope of the NEC in 90.2 doesn't make mention of this?

Wait 90.2(B)(1) says automotive vehicles are NOT covered.

What rules do apply?

No idea.

And consider if you wire a mobile unit how are inspections handled?

Thanks Iwire..I thought I was missing something when looking thru the NEC.

Other rules somewhere must apply. OSHA or another NFPA or Automotive Standard?

Maybe the listing of a generator allows or restricts an the installation...

OSHA applies pretty much anywhere there are employees other than that I just don't know.

But what happens with most mobile equipment is that it is built to an accepted standard so that each jurisdiction does not require it to be inspected.

On the other hand if you wire it and have it inspected under the NEC in one jurisdiction and then it is brought to another jurisdiction there is nothing to say the second jurisdiction will not require their own inspections.

I looked into this the other day and all I could find was regulations about transporting fuel. If the generator uses fuel from the same tank as the truck engine, that should take care of those issues.

I thought I would find more, like the location of the exaust having to be in the rear, but I didn't.

Common sense would dictate proper bonding of metal parts.
