Re: aic/swd

The number to the left of aic would indicate the rated ampere interupting capacity which you would need to ensure is higher than the short circuit current available at that distribution point of the system.

Re: aic/swd

Most circuit breakers I have seen have Kair labels.

If 22Kair, it would mean the CB has a 22,000 Ampere Interrupting Rating ( air ) for interrupting Short Circuit Current provided the CB has 58 inches of cable with ampacity of the CB.

If the CB is a 100 Amp unit, then the interrupting rating would require that the Short Circuit be 58 inches of 3 AWG copper conductor away from the 100A CB.

Only 15 and 20A 1pole breakers are allowed to be Switching Duty Rated and thus carry the SWD marking.

The use of AIR (amps interupting rating) is becoming more popular than AIC (amps interupting capacity) when refering to circuit breakers. I don't know if this is a UL requirement or not, but AIR is refered to by the 2002 NEC. There are differences in the UL test procedures but as engineers and installers we have no other NRTL ratings to use.
