Can anyone tell me when the NEC began requiring 3 wire systems with a common ground in homes versus the older 2 wire systems with no common ground wire?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Seems like the early 1950's for the grounding conductor and the early 1960's for the larger grounding conductor. I am interested to see if I am correct since it is obvious that I do not know.

I have a section of 12-2 NM with a 14 AWG bare ground wire. I would guess its from the 1960 or so.

I have seen a #16 ground in n/m as far back as in the late 40's at least that was when the house was constructed.
