Would an Assisted living unit, that does not qualify as a dwelling unit (no means of cooking), qualify as a dormitory unit and require AFCI overcurrent protection per NEC 406.12 (C)? Or does it qualify as something different?

406.12(C) in for tamper resistant receptacles in child care facilities.

210.12 is for AFCI. The closest reference would be (C) and IMO would not really cover an assisted living facility, but your AHJ s opinion may vary.

(C) Dormitory Units.
All 120-volt, single-phase, 15- and
20-ampere branch circuits supplying outlets installed in dor-
mitory unit bedrooms, living rooms, hallways, closets, and
similar rooms shall be protected by a listed arc-fault circuit
interrupter meeting the requirements of 210.12(A)(1) through
(6) as appropriate

You are correct on the proper code reference. My mind went to the wrong section when I was typing. I meant 210.12(c). Thanks for the correction.

Do it all the time.:)

While dorms are generally associated with schools, institutions, and sometimes private companies, your AHJ may be of a different opinion. One answer may be how the facility is zoned under the IBC or local rules, IDK.
