What is the rule for installing a magnetic switch for security in a Class 1 Div 1 Area such as a Sewage Pit or lift station?

What do you mean for security? Do you mean a switch that will release a door or other mechanism by means of an electromagentic induction? Regardless of voltage, switches and the wiring to them will have to be listed for Class 1, Division 1 locations, and therefore be installed under the provisions of Article 501.

This is a normal security magnet switch you would find in a home alarm system. I have not seen the specifications on the device.

If it is a Class 1 Division 1 area, that switch cannot be used. See 501.6(A).

In some cases, that type switch may be used if it is listed for the purpose. You have to have an intrinsically safe system you are putting the switch on. I would think the security system would have a listing that would allow the use of the type switch that has a sealed glass bulb to enclose a reed switch. The whole system would have to be listed for the purpose and the installation instructions followed to the tee.

The switch will not last long if in a sewage pit or well, because of corrosion. But installing a switching device in a Class1 div. 1 area is OK if it rated for it and routed through an intrinsically safe relay. Don't forget about seal offs of in conduit.
