I recently took an exam and one of the questions was a residential house calculation. It listed all the givens except it didn’t specify if it had a laundry room. Do you always have to factor in the washer and dryer in the calculation? I only ask because no matter how I worked the numbers I couldn’t come up with any of the multiple choice answers.

Washers and dryers are treated differently. If the statement of the problem did not mention laundry, I think you should still account for it. You account for the "washer" by the 1500 VA you need to include for the "laundry circuit load" from 220.52(B). Please note that that 1500 VA gets included with the 3000 VA from the two required small appliance branch circuit and with the 3 VA per square foot for general lighting, with the total reduced using Table 220.42. For the dryer, you simply include 5000 VA.

Would any of this gotten you closer to one of the available answers?
