Nominal Sized Single Gang Box

Article 314.17 C refers to “nominal” sized single gang boxes wherein the cable can be fastened within 8” of the box and doesn’t have to be secured to the box. Specifically, this exception to securing the cable to the box can be used with a single gang box not larger than nominal size 57mm x 100mm (2 1/4” x 4’). Is nominal defined anywhere as far as what the actual allowable variation? Is a single gang box measuring 4 3/8” x 2 1/4” within the domain of nominal 2 1/4” x 4”?

I'd say yes, and not think twice about it. Inside dimensions are what matter anyway.

Basically that section is talking about I nail up one gang box, IMO
