Ground Ring Question

250.52(A)(4) uses the word "encircling" does that mean the ring HAS to "encircle" the building or just has to have 20ft of an attempt to go around the building.

While there is no technical reason why the ground ring has to encircle a building or structure, that is what the code requires. 20' of #4 copper run in a straight line would be just as effective, if not more effective, than that same 20' of #4 run in a circle.
