I have a 100 amp breaker (100 amp bus) main panel. However my subpanel is 125 amp bus. I would like to add a 7.6 kw solar system to my subpanel. This requires a 40 amp breaker be added to my subpanel. Does this break any NEC rules (120%?)? is electrically dangerous in any way?

I believe your are fine. 125 x 120%= 150. With a 100 amp breaker you should be able to add up to 50 amps. Sounds like this is a diy project so we cannot help with details

No, he isn't if I read him right. The 120% rule counts in the main panel as well, and it seems it's got a 100A bus and a 100A main breaker. He can only put 20A into it on the load side no matter how it comes in.
