If the occupancy happens to be a place of business, you may also want to review OHSA 1910-1926 requirments for working an clearance spacing in front of equipment.

I believe that Maryland uses the International Residential Code (IRC). The requirements can probably be found in there. In the NYS Residential Code, which is a modified version of the IRC, it is found in section E3305, I don't know if that is the same numbering as your IRC though.
