I was touring a facility that for localized disconnecting means just plugged in & unplugged under load. The environment was similar to my plant dust, oil, water all are a concern, my feeling was this is not a safe way to disconnect, but is it up to code? We have 240 and 120 through out the facility. What does the NEC say about this should there be a means of disc. before unplugging under load?

Re: Disconnecting Means Under Load

There are plugs and outlets that are "Disconnect Rated", they could be using one of these.

One type I know of is made by the Meltric Co.

They can be equipped with aux contacts, LOTO provisions and Red buttons that when pushed the plug pops out to the disconnected position.
