Bad week for electrical industry in SW Florida

An electrical fire in an aisle of The Home Depot at the corner of U.S. 41 and Six Mile Cypress in Fort Myers closed the store Tuesday morning. A spokesperson for the South Trail Fire Department says the electrical fire started at 7:41 a.m. on a display in the appliance section of the store. An employee tried to put the fire out using an extinguisher before the store's sprinkler system kicked in and doused the blaze with the help of fire crews. The store was evacuated and no injuries were reported. The fire was confined to a single aisle, but the store suffered some water damage from the sprinkler system. Store managers say they will remain closed through the day Tuesday, with hopes to reopen Wednesday morning. They couldn't give a cost estimate on fire damage or lost revenues related to the closure.

A traffic stop turned into a police chase Monday night when an officer with the Fort Myers Police Department pulled over a Chevy SUV for a loud stereo in East Fort Myers. The driver took off and hit a utility pole, knocking out power to over 1700 FPL customers. After the suspect hit the utility pole, he drove another 20 feet and hit a palm tree. The suspect then fled on foot. By 10:00 pm, almost all the power had been restored to FPL customers. Officers are still searching for the suspect, although they do know his identity.
