Anybody have good experience conveyor belt systems.....like the ones at airports? PLC's or Mag Relay type controllers associated with the system?

If anybody has a schematic(partial or full)of an electrical system for a conveyor belt system, I would appreciate it.

I am taking a job where there are a ton of conveyors, some on PLC's, others older style Mag Starters and relays.

For those who are familiar with conveyors....Any troubleshooting pointers would be nice. What to look out for, other than the usually electrical surprises.

(I am solid in basic motor control and have been exposed to PLC,s)

i have only worked on a couple differnt belt conveyors, grociery store check outs, and some really simple conveyors in a distribution warehouse, I dont think I could give any insight on an airport conveyor, sorry...

McCarran in Vegas uses Allen Bradley PLC's. The programing is done by the inhouse techs. On the electrical end, when I worked there, we had a lot (by far the main reason) of reseting overloads due to the airline staff packing luggage on real tight and the photo eyes could not always identify individual pieces so the sorters and diverters (think big paddles that push the bags onto different belts for specific flights) would somtimes try to push two or three bags at a time and either it was too much weight or the padles would pinch the bags and get jammed. Aside from that our regular PM's were to exchange motors when required and make sure the system was functioning right (clean eyes, check amp readings, make sure the warning lights and horns worked, etc....). The system operates on RFID tags attached to each bag, so some of the termenology: Readers=scan the tags on the bags, sorters=move bags to upper or lower belt systems, HSD-high speed diverter=dual paddles that shift bags to different lines or carousels. If you are going to work in an airport, get real familiar with the TSA standards and airport rules on handling luggage. Once the luggage has been scanned by TSA we where not allowed to touch it, so if there was a jam, we had to wait for "official" help.

Thanks Kevin. I'm going to be doing electrical maintenance at LAX....Other than the usual, they have old mag starter/relay systems and a brand new Allen Bradley PLC system in another terminal.
Getting the job was the easy part....going through all of the airport regulations and procedures is a pain though.

I wonder if they are the same only a little more complex??? Obviously the Airport ones are bigger, but are they all that different?

I have been involved in some very large distribution warehouses with sophisticated conveyor systems but all we did was supply the power to the control cabinets.

That said I did not see anything that looked different then small systems other then the scale and sometimes speed.

It seems to me with this

your going to be pretty well set.
