I don't like the spiral because the pages tear out too easy.

I prefer the paperback on the job and by the John, and the handbook in the office.

The handbook is very sturdy don't let your wife throw it at you!
 
I don't know about the NES spiral but had map books where the pages would tear out. Also some spirals use a plastic spiral binding that breaks. Maybe from getting squished between other things or dropped. So over time you only have 1/2 the spiral holding it together. That just makes the 1st problem of the pages tearing out worse.
 
I'm a paperback and Handbook guy. Spirals eventually become folders,
because of all the loose pages that get torn from the spiral binding.
 
Our apprenticeship supplied us with the 5-ring binder type code book, and I'm not a fan. Within a week, my ampacity table page, my 250.122, my 250.66, and my entire article 220 were falling out of the book. I had to get a jumbo pack of those little sticky Cheerio things to fix all the pages. If I had a choice in the matter I would have gotten a paperback version.
