I have never delt with a 440v system before but I have recently been asked if a 460v 3ph freight elevator can run off of a 440v 3ph panel. Can this be done or will the voltage difference be a problem?

Only the equipment supplier can answer that definitively, but in general, NEMA specifications call for motors to be capable of +-10% voltage and still perform within spec. If they have other equipment powered from that 440V supply, that would be the most likely source of trouble, although most power supplies also have similar tolerances.

A 460v motor is designed to run on a 480v system. It should run on 440v, but will run hotter attempting to put out its design power. If the expected load is below the design power, it should be okay.

As JR said, the manufacturer is your best source of definite info.

This may help.

elev installers can be picky about supply voltage - sometimes the built in solid state low voltage controls are finicky - it would be best to check with the supplier/installer before making any assumptions.
