I was wondering if 42 ocds. was the limit for all panels and if not what would be the maximum amount of ocds allowed in a panel?

The maximum of 42 was removed from the 2008 NEC. I 'm not sure their is a maximum yet, not sure. Except of course for the design and listing of the panel.

Buck is completely right. The only limit now is that provided by the panel manufacturer.

408.54 Maximum Number of Overcurrent Devices. A
panelboard shall be provided with physical means to prevent
the installation of more overcurrent devices than that
number for which the panelboard was designed, rated, and
listed.

I tried getting a 400amp 52 space a few months ago. It was not yet available yet as the mfg. was waiting on UL listing.

Have you shopped in Canada yet?

square D has been making a 60 space 225A loadcenter for awhile that you can get in canada and other parts of the world.

I'd assume they're still waiting on a UL listing as well before bringing them into the US market.

Either that or they want to lower their inventory on 30 and 40 space loadcenters before making the 60 space available.

The exception in 2008 still has the 42 OCPD's when used in a specific application.

Exception No. 2: Individual protection shall not be required
for a panelboard protected on its supply side by two
main circuit breakers or two sets of fuses having a combined
rating not greater than that of the panelboard. A
panelboard constructed or wired under this exception shall
not contain more than 42 overcurrent devices.
For the purposes
of determining the maximum of 42 overcurrent devices,
a 2-pole or a 3-pole circuit breaker shall be considered
as two or three overcurrent devices, respectively.
