Shunt trip breaker question

Well, the one I was talking about is a 3p 225a breaker for one of several sub-panels in a switchgear. ---

I'm fairly sure that branch-circuit-sized ST breakers do have integral contacts in series with the trip coil, but the one I'm talking about clearly did not. I can find out the type tomorrow. I kept it in case I ever need one without the ST.

I can't tell you about branch circuit CBs with ST coils. Probably the smallest I have ever dealt with is about the size of the one you have.

The original one was an ITE, the replacement a Siemens. The breaker number is QJ23B225001S01, the shunt-trip accessory number is S01QJOR3.

The wiring diagram on the side of the case says, in part: "Caution: Auxiliary switch must be connected in series with the shunt trip" and shows a diagram.
