The code doesnt say that it has to be grey, just that the grounded conductor has to be white or grey. However, I would stick with the premise wiring colors - if they use grey for 277 circuits, I would do the same.

By the way, I agree with Matt that I'd go with the grey if possible. Its the way to do it, if grey is already the standard for 277 in that bldg.
