I was told today by a light rep that there will be a ban on the manufacture of new HPS fixures in the US beginning in 2012 and that new HPS lamps will be banned at some point thereafter but no date was given.

Web search turned up nothing for me.

Anyone else heard this? Have a weblink?

thanks.

I do know the push to implement pulse start MH and phase out non pulse start. I took a webinair on the subject.

That doesn't sound right. HPS tends to be even more efficient than MH.

Although you couldn't blame our lawmakers if they banned them based on the ugly yellow color of light they give off.

Sounds like hearsay to me. HPS is by far one of the most energy efficient light sources available. If they do ban it, it would be the result of insane thought processes.

Lower wattage MH (250W & lower) has too short a lamp life compared to HPS, it was a bad idea to ever use HPS for indoor lighting, but outdoor lighting it's fine IMO.

Well, if one group of greenies manage to get HPS lighting banned, another group of them will scream bloody murder. Metal Halide lighting interferes with sea turtle nesting, as it looks like the moon to the silly reptiles. A lot of coastal places require HPS lighting for just that reason.

The rep emailed this to us today:

".....I have had conversations with Acuity Brands Lighting regarding the potential phase out of High Pressure Sodium fixtures and have clarification on this issue.

There is a pending piece of federal legislation to regulate the minimum lumens per watt for outdoor lighting fixtures. If it goes through as originally written, it would ban a great number of offerings from all lighting manufacturers. I have found out that most high pressure sodium fixtures would still meet the thresholds......."

Seems as though he spoke too quickly. Imagine that.

Maybe we'll all have to use LED fixtures. A 120W LED streetlight has about the same lumen output as a 250W HPS streetlight.
