Hey, that's just wrong! The black should be the line side, and the white should supply the load.

What are those sockets used for?

They're great for troubleshooting intermittent circuit problems. Put in a bulb and connect it in series with the fuse or breaker wire. (Remember: black = line; white = load. )

One person watches the bulb while the other wiggles various devices on the circuit. If you're alone, you can use a receptacle, and extension cord, and a lamp.
