Grounding circuits

I believe the primary reason one ground can be used for multiple circuits is the assumption you will not have more then one ground fault at the same time.

250.122 (a) doesn't seem very clear to me??

It's NEC, it's not supposed to be clear :)
250.122(C) might address your question more specifically.
I believe the primary reasons are that it's highly there will be a ground fault on more than 1 circuit in a multiple circuit system at a time.
