Can Tray Cable, 600V jacketed 12/3 with a ground, be installed in a home as a general branch circuit(receptacle, lighting, etc)?
I am unable to clearly define the answer in the code book.
Any opinions on the subject would be great.
Thanks!

Art. 336.12(2)

Art. 336.12(2)

Thanks for the Welcome.
Looking at this article for uses not permitted as open cable. But installed in a house the cable will be inside the wall and supported. It doesnt seem to fit that definition.

Which code are you working under?

The 2008 NEC section 336.12(2) states:
336.12 Uses Not Permitted.
Type TC tray cable shall not be installed or used as follows:
(1) Installed where it will be exposed to physical damage
(2) Installed outside a raceway or cable tray system, except as permitted in 336.10(7)
(3) Used where exposed to direct rays of the sun, unless identified as sunlight resistant
(4) Direct buried, unless identified for such use

So under the 2008 NEC TC cable is not permitted to be installed outside of a raceway or cable tray system.

Under the 2002 NEC this section prohibits installing TC cable as open cables on brackets or cleats.

Still using 2002 NEC. However, Looks like it would not be worth it to pursue the issue since the 2008 NEC really defines that point well. THanks for the reference to the 2008 NEC. I guess I will stick with NM cable.
