All,

I have received a question as to truck-mounted gasoline dispensers. An electric pump, C1D1-rated, is used to transfer gasoline between the storage tank on the pickup to smaller container to power smaller tractors or related equipment. The pump is cord connected with an extension cord to a receptacle on the exterior of the building or whatever site they may be at.

The question I received was "is there a minimum distance the plug connection must be from this pump?" I am tempted to say 18" and treat this similar to a full-size dispenser.

Any responses in support or to the contrary would be appreciated. Thanks,

Since I don't know the pressure or flowrates that the fuel would be dispensed, nor do I know whether or not the dispensing system is actually listed, I would use 3' minimum and have a few modest concerns if the receptacle was within 10':
  • If it is less than 18" above grade, the receptacle and the cap would still need to be xp. Top fed, the receptacle would need a conduit seal, even if the receptacle was factory sealed.
  • If it is entirely above 18", an underground feed would require a conduit seal; nothing else would need to be xp, but consider 514.7(& 511.7)
  • Assuming the cord is in good repair and otherwise complies with 501.140, I would have no concern if it dipped into the 10' radius.
I used NFPA 497, Figure 5.4.9.1(a) as the basis.
