Training of employees in approved methods of resuscitation, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, shall be certified by the employer annually.

Our safety dept took this statement as meaning CPR training yearly.
In our state, CPR training is good for two years, does the certified verbage just indicate the company need to keep a record of our training or is annual training required?

That sounds like a quotation, or at least a summary, of some organization's requirements. So the answer depends on what that organization says on the topic.

To me, based only on the little you have cited, I think that if the company takes a look once a year, and satisfies itself that everyone has a current card, and places a document in the company records attesting to the fact that they did this verification, you have met the requirement.

I would agree.

What exactly does this have to do with Electrical Safety. Or even safety in general.

Safety - The condition of being safe; freedom from danger, risk, or injury.

Safety is about the prevention of injury, not the reaction to it. Limiting a workers daily calories in their diet would have more justification in 70E than CPR training since it at least prevents the heart attack.

I've had CPR training 5 times in my life. I think it's helpful. I even put it on my resume since it's usually an older person interviewing me and they might like to have me around. But I don't understand how it's under the scope or jurisdiction of 70E.

"NFPA states the employer shall certify training on an annual basis. This does not specifically require annual training. This wording was used due to the refresher training differences between the American Red Cross (annual refresher training) as compared to the American Heart Asociation (biennial refresher training.) NFPA 70E will accept CPR training from both organizations."

Read the previous sentence in NFPA 70E, Art. 110.6(C):

"Employees shall be regularly instructed in methods of first aid and emergency procedures, such as approved methosd of resuscitation, if their duties warrant such training. Training of employees in approved methods of resuscitation, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, shall be certified by the employer annually."

That first sentence says individuals have to be instructed regularly, not necessarily annually. The second sentence says your employer has to certify annually that all individuals have been trained regularly in approved methods.

Mr. Bill pointed out that CPR cards have different expiration dates, depending on the course and issuer (which approved the methods). Could be two years, could be one.

I used to be on the local emergency medical services council. A doctor did a study once on whether EMT's, who do CPR frequently, were actually doing it right. In a huge percentage of cases, they weren't. We made 'em all get recertified annually, no matter what the Heart Assn. or Red Cross required. An employer has the right to establish stricter standards.
