Detached Garage

Is it allowable to have a 200amp service on a residential detached garage and then have a seperate sub panel powered from the main residence that would be controlled off of a back up generator and feeding the emergency circuits in the detached garage/apartment. This may have been discussed but I am wondering if there is code reference. Thanks

You are our bringing the rules found in 225.30 and 230.2 together. Where more than one building or other structure is on the same property and under single management seems to be the key. 230.2 would allow optional stand by or emergency systems as a second service to the garage. 225.30 would allow emergency or optional stand by systems as long as both buildings where under single management. Though there is no single section in the code that addresses your situation you may be ok.
I would ask does the owner of one of these buildings have legal right of entry into both buildings. Is there single management for both buildings?

Yes the owner has legal right to the property since it is his residental home and personal property.
