Did a service call today.... power out to one circuit. Open neutral. Spied these gems along the way.

I'd have put a connector on that pipe. But I do admit I have put in some kinked pipes once in a while. Then again, I do LV / CCTV, so no one ever really seems to care

Actually, that's not the cardboard core you're seeing (and that's exactly what I thought when I first saw it myself!), but it's bakelite. The tape is just to cover up the wire terminals. Yes, they are exposed. it's one of these critters:
