I've never played around much with CTs, and transformers in general are not my strong point. So here's my question, when shorting a CT do you need to short both leads together or is shorting one lead to ground sufficient? I'm thinking that you need to short both leads together but im being told otherwise.

Any info is appreciated or if someone has a good web page that I can learn more about this subject.

Shorting only one lead to ground does absolutely nothing and the CT if around an energized conductor will fry.

You must short both leads together.

If you had a battery and connected one terminal to ground would it short anything out?

I am in full agreement with the previous posts, the secondary terminals/leads are to be shorted together until connected to the circuit that they are to be used in. It will short them together at that time. Usually one secondary terminal is connected to ground for normal operation. This provides the voltage generated at the secondary with a reference, keeps it from floating above ground, & thus provides safety.

Agree with previous posts. The terminals need to be shorted together. If you don't bad things will happen.

I agree with you guys. Am I correct in thinking that shorting one lead to ground just gives it a reference to ground which in turn gives the other side something to arc to when the voltage gets high enough?
