I was in a residence today and found a branch cable 3-#6awg wires and a bare aluminum ground for an oven receptacle. The ground was cut off about 3 feet short of the receptacle. I believe this would pose a safety hazard. I believe I can splice an al wire of same size to ground the recep without a need for a box. Can anyone speak to this, is there anything else I need to do? Thanks.

Is this oven cord and plug connected? How many conductors are in the cord supplying the stove?

Welcome to the forum. :)

How did they manage to cut the ground off if it was in the cable ?
What you likely have now is a 3 prong cord and receptacle and assuming was done over 10 years ago, and it is legal. What they have is a jumper from range frame to the neutral.

If you now add a ground wire you will need to change the receptacle and cord to 4 prong and remove the jumper

I really don't trust splicing alum. on something like this. If you do it can not simply be a standard wire nut.

And welcome to the forum

As to needing a box i think required. I suggest either do the job with new cable or leave it alone.
