AHU Disconnect Mounted on the Unit

Per 110.26(A) I am reading that a disconnect that is factory mounted to the AHU still requires the working clearance as stated in 110.26(A).

I wrote up an electrical contractor at a site I walked. The Electrical contractor then wrote an RFI to the Engineer and the engineer said the installation is acceptable per the NEC (But did not give a section).

The clearance currently is 30" and the door opens to about 80 degrees.

Let me know your thoughts on this installation.

As bad as I hate to agree with an inspector I think you have them. The engineer may have 110.26 (A) 2 in mind which is working width not depth.
110.26 (A) 1 table has it as 36''. But that 36'' can be from the enclosure.

I would tell that engineer that he needs to come visit the site with you. Then let him read the code for you word by word. Offer him a paper towel to get the egg off.

the door needs to open 90 degrees, and you need 36" out front. 30" side to side, and the disconnect does not have to be centered in that 30".
