Greeting to all,
I have the following three questions can any body help me and give me reference of NEC, IEEE or IEC and some information.

1. I have been asked for TVSS to add in panel boards. Does TVSS need circuit breaker to install in panel board like common load. If it does then what breaker size and cable size it needs.

2. I have also one pad-mounted transformer which is compact. I have been also asked to provide surge arrester for it. Doesnt pad-mounted transformer itself contains surg arrester. It is a medium voltage transformer about 630kVA.

3. What is difference between surge arrester and TVSS. When and where should I use TVSS and Surge Arrester.

AFAIK, surge arresters can also be referred to as lightning arresters.

TVSS are for more subtle surges, the type of which can fry a computer component without you seeing any other effects in your electrical system operation.

Many good TVSS units are rated to be directly connected to the main bus of your service equipment without any further overcurrect protection or disconnecting means. Of course, if you connect them in this manner, you will have to shut the whole down place to safely work on it.

TVSS is also known as SPD. the UL 1449 3rd addition specifies the mothodes and ratings of these. the NEC2008 list how the SPD can be installed. SPD for low voltage systems. your pad mount would need to have surge arresters installed.

Are you designing a system for a specific manufacturer's equipment or for general bidding purposes?

In the US most panelboard manufacturers have TVSS units designed to be mounted directly into their equipment, these include the breaker and the conductors.

In general a TVSS will require a 30A breaker to feed it. A TVSS is most effective when the conductors are kept to a very short length (less than 1 meter) with no 90? bends.

A surge arrestor is usually an option for transformers, just include one in your specifications and let the manufacturer choose it.

If you have access to IEEE articles check out ANSI/IEEE 62.41; jjacobs already mentioned UL 1449 as well.

By the way, welcome to the forum Hameed. I can see you're going to be one of those guys who hit 1000 posts in the first year :D
