Today I was sent out to take a look at a job that was done by an A/V contractor and found they had supported their hybrid cable to the natural gas pipeline that runs through the attic of this building. I have been told for years that we can't support cables from the nat. gas piping but I can't find the correct code article. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks

How about 300.11.B.3? I know it may be a stretch but by a loose definition of "raceway" could that be used? I don't know just a shot in the dark. Thanks again.

I would not consider a gas pipe to be a raceway or cable so 300.11(B)(1) & (2) would not apply.

There is nothing specific in the NEC that prohibits supporting an A/V cable from a gas pipe.

The best you can get is that the AHJ would not "approve" the installation.

800.133

Also state cables cannot be supported to raceways, boxes, conduit.

Most AHJs will not allow electrical & low voltage cables to be supported by other trades' work - pipe, duct work. etc

250.52 B 1 Prohibits the use of gas piping as a grounding electrode. It could be said that gas piping is not allowed for electrical purposes i.e. grounding. Supporting cables would be an electrical use also. A bit of a stretch, but I would back you up if I were the AHJ.

NFPA 13 Prohibits sprinkler pipe from being used to support electrical cables or conduit.

NFPA 54 National Fuel Gas Code may have similar restrictions for using gas pipe to support electrical cabling

Didnt they make a change in 08 that now allows mc to be secured to ceiling support wires or something similar.

There is no new change but ceiling wires can support cables and raceways in accordance with 300.1(A)(1) & (2).

I saw this in ec&m mike holt was saying in 05 that ceiling support wires could not be used to support cables etc. I think it was an article on changes in 08 maybe a black cover nec in red ink on mag cover.
