Simple series/parallel question?

When I was in the Army, this photographer couldn't understand why he couldn't boost his photoflash batteries (4.5V) with a 6.0V external battery in parallel. Fact is, he didn't understand much of anything.

In addition to four series 6v + one series 12 volt, how about:
three bigger 12 volt batteries
six smaller 12 volt series/parallel
single/parallel 36 volt batteries
parallel/series 18 volt batteries?

Asymetric series strings of batteries are never a good idea; good ideas already mentioned are more and smaller batteries, or higher voltage and new electronics.
