We just got a violation for an installation feeding 2 panels from one switch with double lugs. The switch was part of the service equipment.

The disconnect is fused at 150A and the main panel it feeds is 80 feet away and 150A also. The smaller panel is much closer (5 feet) and fed by #6's protected at end of run by 2P 60A CB w/ tie down.

Inspector says conductors for 2nd panel are a tap (which is true I think)
and no taps allowed in service switch. He wants us to put a gutter next
to switch and tap there.

He did not give us code section. Is he correct ?

Thanks !

Take a look at 240.21. Inspectors ought to be able to give code reference when asked.

Isnt the tap a feeder? And are feeders allowed to occupy the same enclosure as service conductors. I do not think so.

stew,

Have you ever ran a feeder from a panel that contains the Main C.B., same enclosure as

the service entrance conductors, right ?

They are permitted in the same enclosure just not in the same raceway. 230.7

Thats waht I meant to say. Maybe he is considering the enclosure as a raceway?

If that were true then how could you have the 150 amp feeder in there as well as the 60 amp tap. Wouldn't they both be a violation?
