Limitations on 120v raceway to fire smoke dampers

I am currently designing the routing of 120v feeds to fire smoke dampers in a large private residence. The engineer of record has insisted that these be installed in rigid galvanized conduit. I know in the past in school and hospital projects that EMT and MC cable was used, and passed inspection. Is this a new fire code question, or a whim of the engineer?

I can't think of a reason why rigid conduit would be needed, the SFD's are wired in a fail-

safe manner with power on them full time. If the EE is worried about the supply being

protected, the worst thing that can happen is the SFD will close ?
