I am running some surface mount raceway (wiremold 500 series) and the customer wants me to run it behind the gas line which is present in one place. Rather than go over it. Is there a NEC rule on that. The raceway would touch the gas line where it was run under it at that one point. Can a raceway (conduit) touch a gas pipe provided it is bonded?

Since I was knee high to a grasshopper I was taught to insulate copper pipe from my pipes. Roofing paper was the material of choice if contact was unavoidable.

Yes, but as already pointed out, gas piping is typically black iron and metal wiremold would also be steel.
