Inside a building, what is the maximum generator integral fuel tank size allowed?

From NFPA 110 Standard for Emergency and Standby Power Systems, 2002
7.9.1.1 All fuel tanks and systems shall be installed and maintained in accordance with NFPA 30[/B], Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code, NFPA 37, Standard for the Installation and Use of Stationary Combustion Engines and Gas Turbines, NFPA 54, National Fuel Gas Code, and NFPA 58, Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code.

7.9.5 Integral tanks of the following capacities shall be permitted inside or on roofs of structures, or as approved by the authority having jurisdiction:

(1) Maximum of 2498 L (660 gal) diesel fuel

However NFPA 37 states:
From NFPA 37: Standard for the Installation and Use of Stationary Combustion Engines and Gas Turbines, 2002
6.3.2 Fuel Tanks Inside Structures.

6.3.2.2* Fuel tanks not in a room by themselves shall not exceed 2500 L (660 gal). Fuel tanks larger than 2500 L (660 gal) capacity shall be enclosed in a room in accordance with 6.3.5 or 6.3.6. Not more than one such 2500 L (660 gal) capacity tank, or two or more of these tanks with an aggregate capacity of not more than 2500 L (660 gal), shall be connected to one engine.

Exception: Fuel tanks of any size shall be permitted within engine rooms or mechanical spaces, provided the engine or mechanical room is designed using recognized engineering practices with suitable fire detection, fire suppression, and containment means to prevent the spread of fire beyond the room of origin.

Does this mean i can double the size of my belly tank to 1320 gallons, since NFPA 110 says the installation can be in accordance with NFPA37?

Any insight on this would be very helpful, thank you.

It looks to me like the fuel tank can be any size, if you meet the requirements in the exception for containment, suppressions, ect.

It also looks to me like the AHJ has to ability to approve tanks larger than 660 gal.

Have you thought about how you are going to fill that puppy?

Steve

We have 225 gallon day tanks in the generator room and a 25,000 gallon main tank underground.
